BUTUAN CITY -- Caraga Police Regional Director Rene Jamolod Elumbaring relieved two top police officials in the wake of last Sunday afternoon's raid by New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Lingig town, Surigao del Sur.

Relieved from their posts were Surigao del Sur Provincial Director Admirante Josue and Lingig, Surigao del Sur Municipal Police Chief Evelyn Frugalidad.

Superintendent Arthur Sanchez replaced Josue as officer in charge while Chief Inspector Felix Plaza took over Frugalidad.

Elumbaring did not reveal the fate of the 15 policemen of the Lingig, Surigao del Sur Municipal Police office.

Around 30 fully armed rebels nearly emptied the police station's arsenal and ammunitions by carting away 11 M-16 armalite rifles, three M-203s, five handguns and a Winchester shotgun.

Elumbaring said Lingig, Surigao del Sur Municipal Mayor Jimmy Luna was conducting barangay visitation Sunday in Barangay Pagtila-an when he was abducted by NPA rebels clad in military uniforms aboard three to four hired passenger vans.

Meanwhile, the intelligence community in the Caraga Region is now investigating reports that some town mayors in the region are supporting the communist rebels.

Reports said two municipal mayors have complained to the military about being victimized recently by the NPA rebels despite giving them monthly subsistence and arms.

The NPA had issued yet a statement regarding the report.

Earlier, NPA spokesperson Ka Maria Malaya said they would intensify attacks against military and police establishments.

In a radio interview, Malaya even advised police and military personnel to surrender their firearms.
