Gold Crest backs FCD kids in Phillips Open

* Organizer also expects Iligan, Bukidnon chessers

NOW they have enough reason to be there and compete.

FCD (Fighting Chess Defenders) kids Lennon Hart Salgados and Antonio Chavez Jr., apparently rich in talent but lack in resources, get a big boost anew from one of their "godfathers" National Master Roly Tan.

Gold Crest Marketing, owned by the benevolent adviser of Metro Cagayan Chess Club (MCCC), will support the campaign of the two youngsters in the 3rd Camp Phillips Open that will fire off on Thursday at Chito Lorenzo Pavillon in Camp Phillips, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

The 15-year-old Chavez and the 12-year-old Salgados will try to sustain their magnificent 1-4 finish in the just-held 2nd Balingasag Open which attracted the top local chess acts in the region including National Masters Levi Mercado and Roger Verganio and Candidate Master Johnnel Balquin.

It can be recalled that the Red Dragons tandem of Chavez and Salgados accomplished such feats in Balingasag with only a little bit of "oxygen" left in their reservoir.

"Naningkamot gyod `mi adto nga makasirit sa last four rounds pag-ingon ni 'Shirov' nga last money na lang `tong P50 nga pang-survival namo sa Balingasag," Chavez recalled to which his much younger compatriot quickly added, "Mas maayo gyod na'ng modayo nga hard labor ang sitwasyon kay maningkamot pag-ayo."

National Arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon said woodpushers from as far as Iligan and Bukidnon will also vie for prizes and honors in the two-day chessfest being organized by Audie Abrea and sponsored by Del Monte Philippines.

"Bibo `ta ani sa Camp Phillips kay mora'g dal-on sab utro ni Doc iyang mga sakop sa Camaman-an," said Leo Dinglasan, among the darkhorse bets in the company of Jaime Frias, Silverio Abasolo, Jake Gonzales, Jemuel Calo, Emmanuel Crisologo and defending Camp Phillips Class B champion Loloy "Matsumoto" Torres.
