THE regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 10 assured that there had been no remarkable price increase on basic and prime commodities since the additional two percent addition on the Reformed Value Added Tax (RVAT).

DTI 10 Chief for Costumer Service Division Engineer Elvira A. Cajigas said as of last Thursday they observed no noticeable price increase on their products.

According to their Price Monitoring Report on Basic and Prime Manufactured Commodities most of the stores and retailers in Northern Mindanao had no price changes in items like canned fish/sardines, processed milk, flour, canned meat and noodles.

In Cagayan de Oro City processed and canned beef products even had a drop in prices, but coffee like "Blend 45" (25 grams) rose by 15 centavos from P13.10 to P13.25.

Cajigas said what is noticeable is the massive increase in the prices of white and brown sugar.

In their report, the price of white sugar in Cagayan de Oro went to P37.25 from January's P35.95 or an increase of P1.30. Brown sugar went up from P29.75 to P31.10 or an increase of P1.35.

In Camiguin, the price of white sugar rose from P36.00 to P41.00 or a difference of P5.00 while brown sugar rose by two pesos from P30.00 to P32.00.

However sugar prices in Lanao del Norte still remains at P37.00 for white and P31.00 for brown sugar. In Misamis Oriental, sugar prices are still stable while Bukidnon has the lowest sugar prices in Northern Mindanao with P35.00 for white and P30.00 for brown sugar.

The regional DTI 10 said their assigned price monitoring team found no retailers taking advantage of RVAT to jack up prices in their prime and basic commodities.

Still they reiterated that they have yet to receive reports from the provincial DTI offices to acquire a full picture of the price situation.
