Arroyo calls up leaders in Mindanao for support
By Ryan Rosauro

OZAMIZ CITY -- In the thick of Malacañang's crisis management measures as a coup attempt was taking shape Friday, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo mustered her traditional support base among local government leaders to prop her up.

Misamis Occidental Governor Loreto Ocampos revealed that as movements in the national capital was developing, the President's aides were calling up local leaders to solicit their personal stand on the unfolding events.

"What’s your opinion on Arroyo’s emergency rule. Post comment.

He said he was among those who receive such call from the Lakas-CMD national directorate, as a way of head count of those who remain loyal to the President.

During the snowballing calls for Arroyo's resignation in July last year, the strong support of local government leaders was among the key factors that made her survive the situation.

However, the situation last Friday was different since the local leaders were not gathered in Manila when the power grab was undertaken as compared to last year when a majority of mayors and governors were convening in the national capital.

An aide of Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. related that a senior Malacañang aide first called the mayor "as a form of loyalty check."

After knowing Parojinog was "still with them", the Malacañang aide tasked him to convince fellow mayors to also support the President.

Around 2 p.m. of Friday, Parojinog told reporters here 16 of his "mayor-friends" have registered continuing loyalty to Arroyo especially as it has become apparent the coup attempt's momentum was simmering down.
