CDO Rapids equals Misor's 0-2 start
* The home squad seeks first MVBA win tomorrow on the road vs GenSan Pacman
MONTAÑA Pawnshop-Davao displayed veteran poise down the stretch to dispose of the Cagayan de Oro Rapids, 95-90, at the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference Sunday evening at the Xavier University gym.
It was a tight contest for 36 minutes with no team getting clear control.
Montaña forward Mark Bonifacio nailed a jumper with four minutes to play that shattered an 82-82 deadlock. At about the same time, Rapids center Mark Benitez was slapped a foul for hitting Mark Legarde, who then made both free throws for an 86-82 Montaña lead.
Cheered by the heavy Sunday crowd, the Rapids fought back behind field goals by Robin Mendoza, Mark Apepe and Jong Rebuya. With 13 seconds to play and the Rapids still trailing 88-91, Abe Galinato made a long jumper but the referees ruled it worth only two markers hence still keeping Montaña ahead by a single point.
Galinato quickly fouled Randy Panerio, who made both gift shots to pad Montana's advantage, 93-90. Dado Ayson then broke up the Rapids' final play by swatting away their forward pass and the ball landing in the hands of teammate Allan Quibod who was immediately tagged by Rebuya and two seconds on the clock. Quibod made both charities for the final score.
Montaña head coach Dodong Cagampang felt relieved his wards avoided a three-game losing skid and instead finished their first round assignments at an even 2-2.
Cagayan de Oro remained winless in two starts going into their next game tomorrow (March 15) when they travel to the Lagao gym to play PacMan-General Santos of boxing champ Manny Pacquiao at 5:30 pm in the tournament backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Panasonic, Sulpicio Lines, Molten and Nature's Spring Drinking Water.
Philip Butel submitted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds to earn best player honors. Aside from Butel, five other Montaña stalwarts had 10 or more points led by Panerio with 22 and Ayson with 14. Bonifacio and Linde Dawal added 13 while Legarde had 10 in a balanced attack for the Armando Quibod-owned franchise. Galinato paced the Rapids with 19 followed by Rebuya with 18 markers.
