Probe bureau eyes drug angle in murders

THE regional office of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Northern Mindanao is studying drugs, carnapping, kidnapping for ransom, and other angles on the death of two Capitol employees in Misamis Oriental.

NBI regional director Virgilio Mendez has discounted the possibility of kidnap for ransom as the motive behind the deaths of Manuel Natindim and Marlon Roa, both from Balingasag town in Misamis Oriental.

Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno during his radio program said the incident is a serious blow to the peace and order efforts of the Lanao del Norte Provincial Government.

The meeting on the case was held between the police in Northern Mindanao headed by Chief Superintendent Florante Baguio and the NBI following the creation of a task force for the purpose of solving the crime.

Mendez said Baguio called for a follow-up investigation from Iligan City to Lanao del Norte to determine the identities of the killers.

Natindim was a first cousin of the governor and works at the Provincial Agricultural and Natural Resources Office.

Roa, who was Moreno's nephew and the son of former provincial board Mike Roa, was first assigned at the Provincial Governor's Office but was transferred to the Provincial Health Office to help out in the distribution of the PhilHealth cards.

Natimdim and Roa went missing on March 9. Their bodies were found March 15 at the boundary of Barangay Landa, Baloi, Lanao del Norte.

Moreno lamented the deaths of the two men saying, "That's why there is a greater need than ever for stronger security ties among local government units to prevent a similar incident from happening."

He also vowed that there would be no interference from his part in the ongoing investigation.

"I have some leads but I would prefer that they pursue the investigation thoroughly," he added.

Moreno called on the task force to conduct a full-blown "no holds barred, no stone unturned" inquiry into the deaths of Roa and Natindim.

Mendez said they have received reports that one of the two men figured in a vehicular accident that might have triggered the murders.

He said they are looking into the allegations that drugs or drug-related activities were the motives behind the murders. (Stephen Capillas/With a report from Johnny Agustin of Sun.Star SuperBalita)
