Dubbed as "Pando Guiwan Memorial Cup," the two-day Las Vegas-type knockout tourney will be held on April 1 to 2 at the Divisoria Chess Plaza.

"For a start, ginagmay lang sa pero ato ning himoon as a huge special event nga regular na gyod ang pag-hold annually," agreed Pando's friends in local chess community.

Already, Danny Velez and Ismar Estrella have committed to act as major sponsors for the opening salvo of the Memorial Cup, even as Leo Dinglasan's co-arbiter Jokorn Maestrado had disclosed that some individuals have also contributed something to make the event a success.

"A total of P6,600 lang una atong target nga maabot sa premyo and we're close to achieving that goal. Kadtong mga naka-ila kang Pando among gi-expect nga motabang ini nga tournament," Maestrado said.

Meanwhile, the 2nd Bonbon 14-Under Kiddies Chess Challenge will take place this summer at Barangay Bonbon Elementary School. Around P3,000 in total cash prizes plus trophies will be up for grabs.

FCD (Fighting Chess Defenders) mentors -- Lynde Salgados, Jaime Frias and Johnnel Balquin -- were also delighted by the IBM laptop computer being entrusted by a benevolent sportsman for the speedy development of the promising kids in the locality.

"From Bonbon, hopefully mahinay-hinay nato og spread ang development sa chess sa uban nga lugar especially ang pag-discover ug pagtudlo sa mga bata nga naay potential. Dako kaayong tabang ang laptop ilabi na ang presensiya ni Doc nga nakadasig sa mga players," Frias said.

Only the other day, former city councilor Hilario Roy Raagas had reiterated his plan to organize another kiddies chess tournament this coming April at the Raagas beach, also in Bonbon.

Raagas intends to welcome kiddie participants from the neighboring barangays of Bayabas and Kauswagan in his initial chess undertaking for this year.

"After sa Bonbon, hangyoon nako ang Kapitan sa Bayabas ug Kauswagan nga sila na sab ang mo-host sa sunod nga mga hugna of this kiddies chess tournament for the three barangays," Raagas, a close relative of International Master Banjo Barcenilla (now in the US), told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
