PRYCE Pharma-MisOr improved its chances of making the semifinal round of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference by blasting the winless Cagayan de Oro, 80-71, in continuing action Wednesday at the Xavier University gym.

Pryce Pharma trailed at the half, 34-39, until forward Ariel Trumpeta came off the bench to score eight points in the third period and combine with Jayson Alfeche to turn the tide in their favor, 64-53.

Still, CDO puts up a valiant fight in the final period and managed to cut the lead to a single point on several occasions, the last coming at the 3:56 mark on two free throws by center Mark Benitez, 69-70. Alfeche retaliated with a basket to pad Pryce Pharma's lead, 72-69 and then disaster struck for Cagayan de Oro dribblers as they missed six consecutive free throws that could have reversed the final outcome.

Point guard Raul Redulosa clustered for straight points and Trumpeta capped Pryce Pharma's 9-0 run with a triple that knocked the fight out of the Rapids, 79-69 and 50 ticks remaining.

A late field goal by CDO guard Robin Mendoza and a free throw split by Redulosa settled the final count.

Alfeche and center Marvin Mercado topped Pryce Pharma with 14 markers each, notching the second win in six outings for the team of MVBA Chairman Governor Oscar Moreno and Coach Rex Salvana.

Trumpeta and Redulosa both finished with 11 points. Benitez led CDO with 18 points followed by guard Ramsey Bajuyo with 10.

The Rapids remained winless in four starts but remain mathematically in contention for a semifinal seat in the league backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Panasonic, Nature's Spring Drinking Water, Molten and Sulpicio Lines.

Meanwhile in the Visayas Division, all eyes will be on the benches as Coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba and his M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Jewelers (1-0) visit Coach Eddie Ybañez and the Mantawi Traders (0-1) today (March 31) at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex starting at 5:30 pm.

Aside from the player match ups, both head coaches renew their storied rivalry as they face each other for the first time since the 2003 Sinulog Cup where Coach Ybañez' ML Kwarta Padala Money Movers beat Coach Alcoseba's M. Lhuillier Jewelers in the championship match.

Both teams merged after the tournament with Coach Ybañez becoming one of Coach Alcoseba's assistant coaches.
