Tourism office to probe girl's drowning By Lizanilla J. Amarga
CAMIGUIN Governor Pedro Romualdo and Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director for Northern Mindanao Catalino Chan are going to hold an investigation on the drowning of a 7-year-old girl last Good Friday at Paras Beach, Camiguin.
Also, a female teenager was yet again claimed by one of the beautiful beaches in Opol, Misamis Oriental during Easter Sunday.
Romualdo called up Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro to say that he is going to call for a meeting to evaluate the activities held during Holy Week in Camiguin Island.
Included in this is the drowning of seven-year-old Hanelyn Desalva at Paras Beach, Camiguin last Good Friday.
Hanelyn was immediately rushed to the Mambajao hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The girl, from Agdaw, Davao, was supposed to be enjoying her vacation in Camiguin Island accompanied by her mother Yolanda Desalva and other family members.
There were reports that the child could have been saved only if there was a lifeguard employed by the beach considering that it was charging an entrance fee.
Also, there were reports that there was a delay in transporting the child to the Mambajao Hospital, as there was no vehicle available in the area.
"Apil kana nga atong paga-tanawon," the governor said.
Hundreds arrived in Camiguin for the Holy Week observance with most spending their time at the beaches.
Chan said he too spent some time at Paras Beach during the Holy Week and that he has ordered Lando Serao to submit a report on the matter.
He said it was the police who got hold of Hanelyn but that when they arrived at the hospital the child has already passed away.
For Chan, it was "unfortunate" that there was no lifeguard or volunteers from the Red Cross or other medical teams around to help save the child.
He said he too would be attending the assessment meeting that Romualdo is calling.
"There were loopholes...we will be able to look into them once the tourism investigation report is submitted," he said.
A 16-year-old teenager, Luzvic Colango from Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur who got married at Baungon, Bukidnon, also died of drowning at the Yasay Beach Resort, Opol, Misamis Oriental.
Opol Police Station investigator said Colango was already somehow drunk when she got into the waters.
She was also reportedly having some problems that she refused to disclose to her peers.
Colango was immediately rushed to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center but the doctors were unable to revive her. (With reports from Sun.Star Superbalita)
