Oro athletes leave Tuesday for Tubod Meet

OVER 300 elementary and secondary athletes from the Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association (COAA) leave Tuesday for Tubod, Lanao del Norte to compete in the 2006 Regional Meet otherwise known as Palarong Pampook.

The same bulk of Palaro contestants from Misamis Oriental province had already left Monday for same purpose via their MOGCHS's quarter.

As of Tuesday afternoon, COAA players and their coaches are being quartered at the City Central School, waiting for final briefing with the delegation officials as well as the arrival of their uniforms.

"For emergency case, dala namo among uniforms sa St. Mary's para depensa daan," said swimming coach John Montalvan.

Henry Limbaco, assistant athletic director for COAA team, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that a total of 12 delegations throughout Region 10 will vie for honors in the week-long competition dubbed as 2006 Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (NMRAA) Meet.

"With the inclusion of Iligan, the rivalry in the Palarong Pampook is getting tougher and more challenging," Limbaco said.

The regional meet, which opens Wednesday at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, serves as the final qualifying phase for Northern Mindanao's finest athletes to the 2006 Palarong Pambansa which will be hosted later this year by Naga city in the Bicol region.

COAA team is expecting gold medal harvest in athletics (with the presence of the bemedalled Aileen Tolentino) and chess bannered by the proven and tested Randolph Dalauta, Lennon Hart Salgados and Beverliza Bernardo.

"Last year na sab ni Tolentino karon sa secondary athletics so she must be highly motivated to dish out an impressive finish," said her long-time mentor, Lerio del Puerto.

For her part, neophyte West City Central chess coach Claire Naguita Emata is both nervous and excited in taking the path to her first Palaro stint.

"Kay kami man gud unta ang magkuyog og uban sa mga bata ni Sir Dan Vicente," said Emata, referring to the multi-titled coach of West City Central who apparently passed away late last year.

Also with the COAA chess teams are the equally talented Abdul Khalid Musor, Alfredo Rapanot, and Shian Tigulo.
