THE City Council filed a resolution Tuesday calling on the Movie and Television Regulatory and Complaint Board (MTRCB) to review the controversial movie "The Da Vinci Code" and classify it as Rated 18 or for adults only.

The development came as the councilors took turns voicing their reactions to a proposal by the Catholic groups to ban the film showing in Cagayan de Oro.

In his special report Councilor Juan Sia said the movie ought to be banned because it might affect the Christian faith of Filipinos.

However, councilors who opposed the movie like broadcaster Zaldy Ocon said the film is a "mere product of the human mind."

Ocon said since the country practice democracy, everybody has the right to choose what to watch.

For her part Councilor Maryanne Enteria said the movie is mere fiction written by its author Dan Brown.

Councilors Alfonso Goking and Sanggunian Kabataan President Jericho Goldmar Ebabacol said it would be better not to petition for banning the movie.

The movie is scheduled for release sometime this month.

Recently, the group Christian Faith Defenders are petitioning for a total ban of the movie.

But Enteria said the ban would be useless since the city residents could obtain pirated copies of the movie in DVD or VCD format at P30.

"So what for is the request to totally ban the movie? It's futile...The more you'll hide it, the more people will look for it," she added.

Acting city Mayor Michelle Tagarda-Spiers said they haven't received any petition from Catholic groups yet.

But Spiers said any resolution to totally ban the movie would not be futile at all.

She said while pirated copies may already be scattered in the city and through the Internet, efforts of the Catholic Faith defenders to warn the people not to believe the movie would be recognized.

Spiers said it's the group's right to campaign against the movie and that their efforts won't go to waste.
