Waban's night!

* As the lanky forward scores 47 pts

JONGJONG "The Rock" Waban proved to be the leading scorer of the Street Players Club when he played like a man possessed on Sunday's opening of the 1st Vice Mayor and City Council Cup Summer basketball tournament here in NHA, Kauswagan.

Ramming a lot of bodies thrown on him and even incurring bruises and contusions when he tumbled on the rugged court, a gutsy Waban never flinched as he buckled down to work to sizzle for a game-high 47 points in the Pujaca Warriors' 80-70 triumph over the Hollow Point.

"Nipis tan-awon si Jongjong pero kusgan ug gahi mao nga lisod pugngan basta makabuylo na," observed the Street Players Club president Marlon "Pinggoy" Castro who opted not to play for fair play's sake and delicadeza.

At least 3 players in Hollow Point uniforms (Ciano Cadaro, Eddie Acero and Edil Guzman) did produce double digit marks but these were not enough to overhaul the prolific effort of Waban who almost single-handedly towed his team to victory.

In the second game, what looked earlier as an exciting battle between two of the dominant centers in the league apparently turned as a mismatch in favor of the fired-up Alvin Talip.

Paired against John Claire dubbed by game announcer Cloyd Valdez as the Street Players' own version of Tim Duncan, it was Talip instead who made the big difference as he led the San Mig Coffee to a thrilling 60-55 win over the Polo Mint.

"Mora'g dili matuhoan pero grabe ka off ang sentro nilang Danny Ompoc," said Manuel "Sorry Gaw" Puyales, referring to Claire who managed just four against Talip's overpowering 28-point performance inside the shaded area.
