Editorial: Re-routing Part 1
EFFECTIVE today until Thursday, the 18th, or Friday this week, the Ysalina bridge would be closed thereby effectively sealing off any easy access to the western or upper portion of the city and thereby giving the riding public one major headache.
As if the one-way lane scheme at the Ysalina Bridge was bad enough, now one has to deal with the bridge being totally cut off in order to expedite the repairs and retrofitting done by the sub-contractor for this week.
In all likelihood this is done to save on repair work that would be done all the way through June when the rainy season would arrive and classes are in full swing. One could only hope they do these repairs right and even ahead of schedule.
Much as one would like to complain about this to high heavens the fact remains that these repairs needs to be done effectively and quickly in order to eliminate the inconvenience in the soonest possible time.
One could only hope that this re-routing scheme done by the Roads and Traffic Administration would prove effective in reducing the traffic congestion. The agency after all will bear the brunt of the blame if they screw it up.
While the success rate is doubtful at best at least something's being done. What worries a lot of people is if the schemes only serve to aggravate the situation. In that respect it's best if we extend cooperation to make sure these schemes work.
Public cooperation and discipline between driver, commuter, RTA aides and everyone else is urgently needed at this difficult time.
If anything everyone and not just the riding public would be inconvenienced if we don't take the effort to make these re-routing schemes work.
Re-routing Part 2
So the Gusa route passenger jeepneys want the city government to re-consider their petition to be relocated out of the eastbound terminal and into places where human traffic (read passengers) are most likely to be found.
While it is understandable for these passenger jeepneys to seek out their commuters the problem remains in how they go about it.
By parking their vehicles near malls or other areas where pedestrians usually walk they only contribute to the chaos prevalent in the area.
The reason why these terminals are placed is to bring some sanity back to the streets. So how can one do that when the passenger jeepneys park alongside malls, their noise and smoke blaring while commuters have a hard time navigating their way out of the crowd of PUJs?
Discipline is something alien to these PUJ drivers who are driven only by the need to earn money no matter the discomfort to the riding public. Maybe a meeting among the PUJs and the RTA is in order.
