Rebel leader urged to return to society, get cured By Stephen Capillas
THE Fourth Infantry Division called on New People's Army (NPA) Northeastern Mindanao spokesman Jorge "Ka Oris" Madlos to return to the fold of the law in order to avail of medical treatment.
In a text message to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Fourth ID spokesman Francisco Simbajon said Fourth ID chief Cardoso Luna made the appeal amid calls for a halt on illegal recruitment of youths to the CPP-NDF-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front-New People's Army).
Simbajon said Luna called on all units under the Fourth ID to monitor and stop all efforts by the NPA to recruit youths in Northern Mindanao region, especially in the countryside where communist presence is strong.
The communist rebels are said to be intensifying their recruitment of youths particularly in Bukidnon province in violation of the Geneva Convention barring the recruitment of youths for warfare.
Simbajon said Luna extended the offer of assistance to Madlos amid reports that the NPA spokesman in Mindanao is suffering from a kidney ailment.
Luna earlier said an ailing Madlos signals a weakening communist insurgency in Mindanao, a top military official said.
Luna said he was buoyed with the news that Madlos is still alive, assailing allegations that the military fabricated his reported death.
Madlos was earlier rumored dead, supposedly after an encounter with government forces somewhere in the Davao province during a plenum held by the communist rebels.
An ailing Madlos dying from a firefight was also illogical, he said, adding the false reports were hoaxes that could only be engineered by the communist movement.
Madlos had earlier blamed his reported death to "military's black propaganda."
With Madlos's health deteriorating, Luna said, other top cadres are now jockeying to assume the position, which was a coveted job since it entails keeping funds derived from "extortion, kidnapping, looting, among others."
Most CPP-NPA commanders, he said, have now found Madlos ineffective for the job. (With a report from Sun.Star SuperBalita)
