It's Pacman v. Iligan in Mindanao Finals
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The PacMan-GenSan team of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao advanced to the Mindanao Division Finals of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference Sunday night by thwarting Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 83-68, and clinching the best-of-three series, 2-1.
Louie Medalla and Apol Coronado combined for 19 points as PacMan raced to a 26-18 advantage after one quarter and never looked back.
The pair continued to wax hot and with more sniping from Jethro Recustodio, PacMan erected their biggest lead of 21 markers, 52-31, on a triple by Coronado.
The defense-minded Pryce Pharma gallantly fought back as they held PacMan scoreless for the first five minutes of the final canto and James Laygo unloaded five straight points to come to their closest, 56-66.
Suddenly, Donald Tadena broke PacMan's silence with five consecutive points, 71-56. Back-to-back triples by Coronado and Weng Farochillen entering the final two minutes sealed the deal for PacMan as they completed a remarkable comeback after losing Game One of the series, 51-64. PacMan also took Game Two, 72-64.
"Since it was Mothers' Day, I told my players to dedicate this game to their moms," said winning coach Ramon Pido. "Our defense on their key players also worked for us today."
Pacquiao thanked his team for giving him a fitting send off gift before leaving for the United States to train for his July 2 bout with Mexican Oscar Larios.
Coronado, a local star from Notre Dame of Dadiangas College, topped PacMan with 19 points via four triples followed by Medalla with 15.
Jessie Lumantas paced Pryce Pharma with 19 points followed by Laygo with 18. PacMan will now face top seed Iligan Archangels of Mayor Lawrence Cruz in a best-of-three series for the Mindanao Division crown starting next week at the MSU-IIT gym.
The Visayas Division Semifinals kicks off today (May 16) with second seed Cebu Landmaster-Toledo hosting the Mantawi Traders at the Marcelo A. Barba Sports Center starting at 5:30PM. Both teams split their elimination round games with Toledo winning last March 25, 81-67. Mantawi got revenge last May 11, 75-72.
Key players for Toledo of realtor Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan are veterans Leo Bat-og, Alex Cainglet, Ronald Paraiso and Carlos Sayon. Mantawi of Mayor Thadeo Ouano and Coach Eddie Ybanez will counter with shooters Doroteo Almacin and Joseph Guangco and twin towers Randy Sevilla and Rino Berame.
