PERFECT start.

Local chessers vying for World Youth slots in the ongoing 2006 National Juniors chess championship in Mandaluyong city have their confidence slowly building up.

And why not?

After three rounds of the nine-round Swiss system elimination, all three of them -- Bryan Jose, Jan Vincent Cayaba and Richelieu Salcedo III -- remain in perfect score.

"Three out of 3 `ming tulo ang problema lang kay taas kaayo ang duration sa dula... maayo la'g madugangan og padala among budget dinhi," Jose told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro via text messaging.

The 19-year-old Jose is the reigning champion of the National Shell Active Junior tournament where his Patag compatriot, Cayaba is a many-time finalist.

The 14-year-old Salcedo, now studying at Rizal Technology University (RTU) in Mandaluyong, is supposed to play in 16-under bracket of the 2006 National Age-Group, which gets underway on May 21-25 at the St. Francis Square building also in Mandaluyong.

"I told him nga sa age-group na modula para maka-relax pa kay gikan pa siya sa Palarong Pambansa in Naga city pero nidula gyod. Basin kaya na pod niya tingali ang juniors o nanimpla lang," said Salcedo's father, Totong in a casual talk with this writer.

Set to join Salcedo in the age-group event on Sunday are the other Palarong Pambansa campaigners in 12-year-old Lennon Hart Salgados and 15-year-old distaff counterpart Lorelie Cuizon.

Randolph Dalauta, 15 -- who in 2003 had represented the country in the Asian Youth championship in Singapore -- will also leave here today for the age-group championship.

"I believe nga maka-away na gyod atong mga bata dinhi kay mopilde naman og Class A," shared National Arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon.

The top-12 finishers in each bracket of the national juniors and age-group events will figure in a single-round robin skirmishes being set on May 27 to June 4 in Tagaytay city. Survivors will represent the country in the Asian and World Youth junior and age group championships.

Woman National Master (WNM) Loreshyl Cuizon, who won a gold for Misamis Oriental during the Mindanao Games in Mati, Davao Oriental, is already seeded in the national women's junior competition.
