Ozamiz opens Pasundayag 2006 By Stephen Capillas
OZAMIZ City opens this year's annual Pasundayag Northern Mindanao festival with its own celebration of the 250th anniversary of its landmark and its City Charter Day celebration in July.
In Wednesday's press conference Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Catalino Chan III said preparations have since gone underway for the annual event to be set in Ozamiz City, considered as Northern Mindanao region's "historical and cultural destination."
Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. said the Pasundayag festival also falls in line with the 250th anniversary of the Fuerte dela Concepcion Y Del Triunfo otherwise known as the "Cotta," one of the last ruins of Spanish fortresses in the country and thus considered a historical landmark in Ozamiz.
Parojinog said the unveiling of the Cotta marker scheduled on July 15 is expected to be graced by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo along with Spanish dignitaries and other foreign diplomats.
This event is among the many highlights for Ozamiz City in July with other major events like the Subanon festival, City Charter Day, Ozamiz City Day and the annual Philippine Councilors League meeting scheduled in its calendar.
Mayor Parojinog also said they have outlined their own preparations for the event. "We have coordinated with the police and the military for this purpose and we have our US, Canadian groups to welcome balikabayans to our city," the mayor said in Visayan.
Meanwhile Chan said the 250th anniversary "Cotta" celebration is especially crucial as it will promote the city into a major historical and cultural destination.
He said it is also expected to drum up interest for Ozamiz City, which is promoting its image with the theme "Ang Bagong Ozamiznon."
"The DOT central office has instructed us to localize funding and organization of the Pasundayag festival in keeping with the agency's 'Wow Philippines' program of localizing major tourism and cultural events," Chan said.
He said the festival is intended to showcase the individual tourism attractions of every participating local government unit (LGU) in Northern Mindanao region.
Among the LGUs in the same region seen to participate in the Pasundayag festival are the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Tangub, Oroquieta, Gingoog, Valencia and Malaybalay and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao, Bukidnon and Camiguin.
These LGUs also have their own set of activities for Pasundayag festival 2006 with Cagayan de Oro holding a travel mart, street parties, a medical mission for Misamisnon balikbayans and a visit by President Arroyo on July 10.
