Gov't agency execs offer apology By Danilo V. Adorador III
THERE won't be any delays in the June 15 opening of the Ysalina bridge, said acting Mayor Michelle Spiers.
She added that the agreement worked out between the City Government and the firm doing the bridge repair and will stand as it is.
Spiers also junked Councilor Alvin Calingin's proposal that a makeshift bridge be constructed alongside Ysalina to ease pedestrian traffic while it is under repair.
She said this will entail unnecessary expenses and that the security of pedestrians crossing a makeshift bridge will not be ensured.
Officials from the Adhi VT Lao construction who snubbed the City Council inquiry Monday also visited her Wednesday to offer apology, she said.
Similar to the explanation of the Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) Northern Mindanao officials, she said, the invited officials of the firm did receive the summon.
The acting mayor said she was not in the position to accept the constructor's apology since it was the councilors who they took offense of the whole snobbery.
The constructor of the SM-Bulua road who was also a no-show at the City Council, offered the same explanation, she said.
Adhi VT Lao officials, Spiers said, reiterated their assurance to complete the repair works on time as agreed: partial opening for vehicle traffic on June 5; end of repair works and full bridge opening on June 15.
She also defended the City Council for inviting Adhi VT Lao officials, although an assurance has been given by the construction firm to finish the bridge prior to the summon.
"The councilors wanted that Adhi VT Lao themselves would appear and explain to the public the nature of the repair and the reason why the bridge had to be closed," she said. "There were also concerns on the slow-pace of the retrofitting works, and the councilors wanted answers."
But she said, "It would have been too drastic" if the councilors had ostracized them.
The City Council Monday gave the invited officials a second chance to appear in next week's regular session, on the pain of being declared as "undesirable personalities."
Councilor Simeon Licayan said the explanation given by the DPWH officials for their absence in last Monday's regular session is too convenient.
"It appears suspicious else how come they both didn't show up at the session at the same time?" said Licayan.
