Salgados stays unbeaten

Holds int'l campaigner and 14-U favorite Pascua to a draw

MANDALUYONG CITY -- Late by 25 minutes, CDO-Misor chessers proved that time element is not bad at all when one is highly motivated to call it payback time.

In what considered as a breather, the 16-under pair of Richelieu Salcedo III and Randolph Dalauta Wednesday erased the stigma brought by their dismal showings on fateful Tuesday by coming out victorious in Round 6 of the 2006 National Age-Group chess eliminations here at St. Francis Square.

Salcedo came out seething in the middle game to win a piece and forced the resignation of Edmond Bless Andal after 35 moves of a Sicilian Accelerated Dragon encounter.

Dalauta, who like Salcedo incurred two-straight setbacks in the previous rounds, bucked inferior position to beat Justin Keith Ver after 47 pushes of a KIA versus French set-up duel.

"Mora'g dili ako ang nagdula kay nadala ug napadaug pa nako sa endgame nga losing ko sa middle," Dalauta, the 2004 14-U titlist, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

The credit, however, goes to 12-year-old Lennon Hart Salgados who followed up his crushing win over Alexis Jacinto with another fighting draw opposite 14-under title-favorite Haridas Pascua of Pangasinan.

Like in his fourth-round draw with international youth campaigner Loren Brigham Lacesta of La Union, Salgados gave up a pawn to preserve his two Bishops and managed a draw in a Colle System battle.

"Malas lang gyod kay di gyod ko makadala sa puti nga piyesa kon sila (the big guns) akong makontra sa national events," said Salgados who now has 5 points on four wins and two draws after six rounds.

Handling white against Letran bet Jude Emil Fronda in the seventh round, a victory will almost ensure a slot by Salgados in the round robin Finals set May 27 to June 4 at same venue.

Dalauta, loser to Adrian Perez and Patrick Erle Florendo in the fourth and fifth rounds, faces 2005 National Shell Active kiddies champion Sheider Nebato of General Santos City, while Salcedo -- who got victimized by James Bulicatin and Joey Angelo Mendoza -- takes on Emmanuel John Salazar.

CDO-Misor's 18-under girls' entry Lorelie Cuizon dropped her sixth-round match with Catherine Florendo of Zamboanga City in what earlier looked like a sure win for her.

"Winning na kaayo kay ako ang nag-atake. Na-overlook lang gyod nako ang back-rank mate kay nakalimot ko'g pahungaw sa kingside," said Cuizon who was left with 3.5 points to show going to the final three rounds.

Mathematically, however, Cuizon has still a chinaman's chance left to qualify in the Finals if she could sweep her remaining matches. Similarly in the case of Salcedo and Dalauta who must have to buckle down to works for them to join the top-12 qualifiers in their respective age brackets.

Already, CDO-Misor has at least two qualifiers in the National Junior Finals also scheduled at same playdates and venue of the World Youth qualifying events bankrolled by new NCFP (National Chess Federation of the Philippines) head Congressman Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. of Surigao del Sur.

The 19-year-old Bryan Jose topped the men's junior elimination, which drew a total of 333 participants, while the older Loreshyl Cuizon enjoyed immediate seeding in the women's junior finals by virtue of her being a titled player and 2005 World Chess Olympiad qualifier in Calvia, Spain.
