Oro's Jose shocks heavy pick Barbosa

MANDALUYONG CITY -- Buoyed up by the late-coming support of Congressman Tinnex Jaraula and ACCP big boss Andy Palarca, national junior eliminations champion Bryan Jose and distaff counterpart Loreshyl Cuizon of Cagayan de Oro overwhelmed their first two opponents in the ongoing 2006 National Junior Finals at the St. Francis Square here.

In fact, Jose even delivered just another stunner in Tuesday morning's third round when he scored a man-size upset win over National Master Oliver Barbosa, easily the pre-tournament favorite in the men's side before meeting the CDO hotshot.

"One piece ko sa among dula pero three pawns down siya. Kulbaan lang ko kay 30 seconds na lang ang nabilin sa akong oras while 30 minutes pa ang iya. Barbosa's Nd6 move was a big blunder. Over confident lang tingali siya kay iya kong gipilde in our previous two encounters," Jose told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

The CDO-Misor team's side felt quite uncomfortable at the start upon seeing Barbosa hopping from one board to another as if belittling Jose who was left alone pondering on the board. But when the smoke of battled cleared, it was the white-wielding Jose proudly standing in front of him after announcing a checkmate after about 40 moves of a Bogo Indian duel.

Jose, reigning National Shell Active Junior titlist, earlier trampled upon Palaro veteran Marco Polo Rosete and Franz Barreto, while his fellow 19-year-old teammate Cuizon outwitted former national women's junior ruler Aices Salvador in her pet Carrokan defense before cruising to another convincing win over Gina Edanol.

"At least focus na ilang mind sa dula nga aduna nay ayuda nga miabot. Sa preparasyon ug stamina gyod ni magdaug kay single round robin unya 12 to 15 players kada bracket," said Rey Abbu whose fatherly presence and opening expertise also counts most in their physical and mental preparations.

In her age-group level round robin affair, Loreshyl's younger sister Lorelie Cuizon split her first two round matches with FEU mainstays Roxanne Olarte and Carina Lumacad.

Salay native Richelieu Salcedo III, the other 16-under finalist, hopes to regain his form after incurring back-to-back losses at the hands of John Ranel Morazo and Revin Briam Vasallo.

"Unta maka-straight ko'g daug kay walay kondisyon akong tira pagtukar sa akong ubo. Tungod siguro sa kabugnaw sa venue nga gamay na lang `mi sa finals," said Salcedo, now in his second year as junior student of Rizal Technology University (RTU).

The would-be Corpus Christi tandem of Lennon Hart Salgados, 12 and Randolph Dalauta, 16 narrowly missed to qualify in the age group Finals. But they both redeemed themselves by sweeping through on Saturday the Youth Festival 16-Under tourney of the Quezon City Chess Circle.

Salgados scored 5.5 points in six rounds to emerge as solo champion while Dalauta edged out fellow 5-pointer Adrian Dimakiling of Davao City in the Bucholz tiebreak to complete a 1-2 finish by CDO-Misor pawnpushers in the day-long event that attracted a total of 44 participants mostly coming from the provinces of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

"We owe our weeks-long survival in the big city to our chess patrons in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental. Their kind support has inspired us to do our best win or lose," said the CDO-Misor chess contingent in acknowledging the efforts of Congressman Jaraula, Mayor Emano, VM Spiers, Governor Moreno and friends in local sports community such as Dr. Arsenio Noble, ACCP's Palarca, Mayor Rocky Calingin, Edu Alaba, Renan Saburnido, Ferdie Padilla, Roly Tan, Maricel Casino Rivera, Celso Balat, "Lolo" Solidum, Jovencio Pangilinan and Jaime Frias.
