CCS hopes to sustain in-school sports reign
By Lynde Salgados

* Tidoy, Sayosay, Lariba, Licayan: Big winners this year

THE past few months spelled success for the sporting campaigns of Corpus Christi athletes that a couple of streamers congratulating their meritorious deeds are proudly hanging on the wall right in front of the secondary building's main gate.

Foremost in the list of the victory banners is secondary jin John Necho Tidoy who became featherweight champion in the 2006 US Taekwondo Open Championship in Dallas, Texas.

Tidoy, however, slows down a bit, settling for a bronze in the just-held `06 Palarong Pambansa in Naga City, Camarines Sur, which saw badminton players Johannes Obenza and Francis Gomez finishing with a silver each.

The biggest winners among the Corpus Christi juggernauts in the annual Palaro meet are secondary swimmer Sarah Sayosay and the elementary pair of table netter Ian Lariba (singles, team event) and taekwondo player Josafat Licayan who all won a gold for the NMRAA's (Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association) cause.

"We're very proud of their feats. I think we're the only school here for this year to produce gold medallists in the Naga Palaro," shares Corpus Christi president, Dr. Alfonso del Fiero.

Obviously excited by the near completion of its three-storey building to house a 25-meter swimming pool and other sports disciplines such as taekwondo, badminton, table tennis, chess and scrabbles, del Fiero is optimistic that more triumphs will go along their way.

"Because we also have a scholarship program for deserving athletes," the school director further said.

Joining the influx of talented athletes combining forces with Corpus Christi notables is multi-titled kiddie chess player, Lennon Hart Salgados from barangay Bonbon Elementary School.

Now turning high school, the 12-year-old Salgados is expected to create a formidable tandem with Randolph Dalauta, 16.

"Sa una maglisod `mi sa Milolympics ug sa uban nga in-school chess competitions kay wala koy timbang. Mausab na ang dagan karon with Lennon's arrival. Naa pa sab sa amo si lady chesser Shian Tigulo nga naka-represent gihapon karong tuiga sa Palarong Pambansa," said Dalauta, the country's 14-under bet during the 2004 Asian Age-Group Chess Championship in Singapore.
