Capitol to look at class shortage
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

MISAMIS Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno is now asking the Department of Education (DepEd) Misamis Oriental to furnish him with the number of new enrollees and the needs of each public school in the province.

"We need to look into the shortages of classrooms and all other needs," said Moreno.

The governor said he has already asked DepEd Misamis Oriental officials to help him in ensuring that his constituents and their children will have quality education no matter how their public schools may be located in far-flung areas.

"Because we at the Provincial Capitol will always support the endeavors of DepEd in bringing quality education to the province," he said over dxIF Bombo Radyo.

Moreno has launched the Early Child Development Program under his right-hand man Teddy Sabuga-a. This project has so far helped out kids to have as much education as they can get even in such early stages of their lives.

In earlier interviews, League of Mayors in the Philippines-Misamis Oriental chairman and Tagoloan Mayor Bambi Emano admitted that several public schools in the province still lack classrooms.

He said the number of new enrollees had galloped at a faster rate than the capability of the DepEd, even with the help of the Provincial Capitol and the local municipalities in constructing new classrooms.

DepEd regional director Estrella Abid-Babano earlier announced there is an 8.9 percent increase in the number of new enrollees for this year.

The regional DepEd office said Northern Mindanao needs at least 217,281 desks and armchairs.

The region also needs the following: 926,307 textbooks -- 792,714 in the elementary and 133,593 in high school, 929 teachers-259 for elementary and 670 for high school, and 91 new classrooms or 50 for the elementary and 41 for high school.
