Police chief willing to exit
WHILE embattled Cagayan de Oro City Police Director Aurelio Trampe is willing to give up his post, Mayor Vicente Emano Thursday denied reports he is initiating the official's ouster.
Trampe, who just came from an educational trip in Singapore, said a rise in the city's crime rate isn't sufficient reason for him to resign.
Emano during his program over dxIF Bombo Radyo said he was not behind moves to replace Trampe.
The mayor added he had left the selection of the city police chief in the hands of the Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office.
Emano was scheduled to meet with PNP Regional Director Florante Baguio at his office Thursday.
Baguio has said his office will conduct an evaluation of the performance of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office to determine if and when Trampe will be replaced.
Administration Councilor Reynaldo Advincula earlier issued a call for Trampe to resign, which he repeated during last Monday's City Council session.
Several councilors, including Vice Mayor Michelle Tagarda Spiers, supported the call, but others like councilors Ian Mark Nacaya and opposition broadcaster-Councilor Zaldy Ocon advised that Trampe be allowed to air his side.
Sanctioned
The city police director is invited to next Monday's regular session.
In response, Trampe said he leaves his fate in the hands of Baguio and Emano.
"If there's an order from General Baguio and Mayor Emano I am willing to relinquish my post as city police director," he said.
But Trampe said the city police have made inroads towards resolving crimes and arresting criminals and were doubling their efforts along this line.
He also denied Advincula's allegation that he simply abandoned his duties while on an education trip to Singapore, saying it was sanctioned by the PNP regional office.
"It was scheduled long time before and I delegated the management to Col. Montalba," Trampe said.
Emano said he doesn't want Trampe to resign, adding that on hindsight, the city's crime rate is not as serious as other cities in Mindanao.
"It's not as serious as in say, Davao City, where there are robberies. However, I am still disturbed by some crimes that did occur in the city like the robbery of the payroll of one security agency which I heard was an inside job and the murder of one man by a gang of drunken youths," Emano said.
Stalled
Emano said there was no truth to reports that he wanted Trampe to be replaced by Deputy City Police Director Antonio Montalba.
Montalba had been reported as being eyed as a replacement for Trampe, but Emano said the deputy police chief was even criticized by local officials during his tenure as acting city police chief.
Emano said he is not dictating on the council to replace Trampe.
Emano made no attempt to hide his displeasure over the appointment of Trampe at the insistence of then PNP Regional Director Dante Tejada.
Montalba was acting city police chief until Trampe's appointment and his promotion was stalled since he had yet to complete his educational requirements for the post. (Stephen Capillas/With a report from Sun.Star SuperBalita)
