By Lynde Salgados

A FIRST-timer in major sports competition shares the spotlight with experienced rivals in the 11th Milo Beginners Inter-School Age-Group Swim Meet concluded in this city recently at the Alwana (March Hotel) swimming pool in Barangay Cugman.

Trained only this year by veteran swimmer Ricardo Balanay, the nine-year-old Dominic Sabornido of Xavier University Grade School (XUGS) showed great potential when he bags two golds each in the 50m freestyle and 100m Individual Medley events of the Milo swimfest for 10 and under boys category.

Of strong body and character, Saburnido's talent was first unveiled during the Bright Rock and MJ Neri swim meets, separately held here a few months ago, where he splashed to over a dozen of combined golds take in his bracket.

"Actually, gusto unta nako nga mag-badminton sab siya nga maoy hilig nako pero gapanghanggat man gyod pirme nga mag-swim mi sa Lauremar beach sa Opol every Sunday. Nakita nako nga naay potential so akong gipatudloan sa basic techniques sa swimming," Dominic's sports-loving father, Renan Saburnido, said.

Highlighting Dominic's awesome debut was his breathtaking finish in the Milo's Individual Medley (100m) contest, which saw him won by just an arm-reach difference.

"I did not expect nga mo-show up dayon kay karon pa lang gyod nga tuig nakakat-on," added the elder Saburnido, proprietor of Swift Sariwanok in Agora, Lapasan.

Milo Swim Meet Director Arlito Rivera, however, referred to Reymeil Casuyon of Tangub Central School (TCS) and DEAF's Ritchie Butigan and Vincent Bendula as the tourney's Big 3 winners with four golds apiece to show.

Casuyon topped the 100m individual medley, 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle in boys 13-14 yrs. level; Butigan ruled the 100m ind. medley, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle in girls 13-14 division; while Bendula dominated the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke in boys 11 to 12 yrs. class.

Joining Saburnido as double gold medallists are Shean Nicole Caballero of St. Mary's, Sixto Abeth Lalanto of XUGS, Ma. Victoria Ucab of Lourdes College High School and TCS bets Kate Arsenal and Joanah Alquizar.

The Daba siblings -- Reuel Mark and Sarah Mae -- of Corpus Christi School led 2 other lone gold takers in the company of TCS compatriots Kim Balatero and Alamo Bay Florida.
