Heavy rains affect Misamis Oriental homes By Lizanilla J. Amarga
SEVERAL shanties located in the eastern coast towns of Misamis Oriental were almost totally flushed out by huge strong waves Tuesday, officials said.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Northern Mindanao is experiencing weather disturbances referred to as an "Inter-Tropical Convergent Zone."
Misamis Oriental Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC-MisOr) chief Teddy Sabuga-a confirmed that there were several houses affected by big waves in Barangay Gracia, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
"My team is proceeding to the area," he told Sun.Star Tuesday.
The team is headed by Danny Matias with representatives from Philippine Rescue 2000 team led by Michael Bustamante.
Initial reports revealed that there were some seven houses that were affected in Barangay Gracia while there were houses located in barangays Balacanas, Casinglot and Baluarte all of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental that were also affected by the waves.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) station at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental also reported that there were some houses in their coastal area that were affected by the waves.
Angela Liculan, an affected Barangay Gracia resident, said they woke up yesterday morning already observing that the waves and wind were already unusual.
"When we woke up we noticed that waves were already huge and the wind strong," she said over dxIF Bombo Radyo.
Liculan said they eventually decided to pack up some of their important stuff and transfer them in a safer place.
"The waves eventually got into our house and now has destroyed our kitchen and comfort room," she said.
She added that those who were affected by the strong waves are now staying at the nearest chapel.
Sabugaa vowed that they will do everything they can to make sure that these families are properly taken cared of after their ordeal Tuesday.
Earlier, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno already issued statements warning residents in these coastal areas and to be wary of the waves brought by weather disturbances as the country enters into its rainy season days.
He assured that they have already prepared contingency measures in such cases including placing some flood-control measures in already identified areas.
