Miss CDO group clamps down on screenings amid scandal
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

THE organizers of Miss Cagayan de Oro 2006 vowed they will be "stricter" in screening their candidates this year after one of their finalists recently figured in a sex scandal that rocked the city last year.

Already, two screenings of applicants to the pageant's title were held and another is scheduled this Saturday at Marco Hotel, Gusa.

Rhia Rita Abalos, the lead organizer of Miss Cagayan de Oro for over several years, said she has received reports that one of their pageant's finalists was the lady in the XU Sex Scandal videotapes.

She said she has seen a copy of the sex scandal video and believe that the incident was unfortunate considering that they usually do "background checks" on their applicants.

"This year we will be stricter," she said.

"But we know it will still be very difficult but we will try our best."

The screening judges among others include Abalos, Isagani Capanig, Lina Estrella Faburada, Decius Esmedalla, Remus Villarosa, Ponciano Ligutom and Jenny Pabayo Boo.

The first screening was held but there were only four applicants: Irish Bolo Azcuna, 22; Tatum R. Salcedo, 19; Lloydhelyn Y. Rivera, 20 and; Genelyn C. Villar, 18.

Abalos said they expected this low turnout in the first screening.

"Because we noticed that the mentors of these ladies usually want to join the last screening," she said.

Last Saturday, the second screening of pageant applicants was held at Sunriva Restaurant.

The applicants were: Rosalie M. Roxas, 24; Rachelle Joy Galang, 21; Roxan M. Lopez, 19; Catherine Galvez, 18; Karyl Jane Waga, 20; Dominique Layas Tala, 18; Jedyl Jamaca, 19; Rosalyn Jumalon, 23; Marie Christine Miñoza, 22; Katrina Manansala, 21; Vanessa Namoc, 19; and Rhea Bactong, 18.

Earlier, a sex scandal videotape of a lady and her paramour circulated all over Cagayan de Oro City.

Mayor Vicente Emano said he even met with the lady and her family. He recounted how the lady sought his help and cried at his office.

The mayor over several radio interviews said he tried to iron out the difference between the lady and her paramour.

Emano also ordered the banning of the sex scandal tape and ordered the raiding of several establishments that were selling the same.

But already, copies of this sex scandal videotape or compact discs have already even reached other major cities in the country such as Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Manila.
