Corpus pride wins in Divisoria chess tilt
ONCE again, 12-year-old Lennon Hart Salgados proved that age doesn't matter in the highly intellectual game of chess.
Displaying a nerve of steel against veteran rivals, the freshman student of Corpus Christi high school pulled off a couple of cliffhanger wins against Popoy Tanoy of Buenavista, Agusan del Sur and Abdul Basare of Quezon, Bukidnon enroute to winning the 3rd Class B "Handicapping" Knockout chess tournament here on Sunday at Divisoria Chess Plaza.
It was a dramatic finish indeed in favor of the youth as 15-year-old Antonio Chavez Jr. and 13-year-old Francisco Porras III joined Salgados in the Final 3 after the smoke of grueling elimination matches cleared.
As Porras drew a bye for the money stage, Chavez routs the ageless Richelieu "Totong" Salcedo Sr., 3.5-.5 while Salgados went through the gauntlet before disposing of Basare in the deciding Game 6.
"Like in his early match-up with Tanoy, Lennon literally rose from the grave against Basare kay patay na kaayo iyang posisyon sa desisyon nila nga dula. Nabuhi lang siya ug nidaug pa sa endgame after he managed to exchange the Queens on the open file," observed Candidate Master Johnnel Balquin.
Salgados had a rest after taking a bye in the next drawing of lots, largely expecting a royale battle with Barangay Bonbon compatriot Chavez in the championship.
But the well-rested Porras surprised everyone when he conquered the heavily favored Chavez via come-from-behind victory.
"Nasorpresa ko sa iyang opening with Black. It started as French with e6 pero nag-c5 siya on his second move," shared Chavez, fully unaware of the position in similar set-up with the Sicilian. (LLS)
