By Lynde Salgados

OZAMIS CITY -- With a good rest, the Misor chessers plunge into action as the P70,000 rich 2006 National Open chess tournament begins here today at the Hilario Ramiro City Gymnasium.

With their NCFP ratings slightly up in the middle of the seeded bets ranking, National Masters Levi Mercado and Roger Verganio as well as Candidate Masters Johnnel Balquin and Bryan Jose may take the comfort of facing less-respected foes.

While an expected double-edge battle ensues on the respective board assignments of Silverio Abasolo, Nelman Lagutin, Rodolfo Calonia Jr., Sittie Halia Sabo and high school entries Antonio Chavez Jr., Randolph Dalauta, and Lennon Hart Salgados.

"The good thing nga buhaton dinhi mao nga focus lang gyod kada dula kay tanan miapil dinhi dili kakumpiyansaan since this is a National Open competition," said Misor team head Doming Oga.

The country's first Super Grandmaster Mark Paragua is installed as the top seed with his burgeoning elo ratings of 2619.

Yet, NCFP-10 director Rey Urbiztondo picked RP's newest International Master Oliver Dimakiling as the sentimental favorite being a Mindanaoan himself born in Davao city.

"Patsada sab hinoon ang performance ni Dimaks sa Turin World Chess Olympiad. Fighting chess gyod walay tabla mao nga nakuha niya ang IM title," agrees Cagayan de Oro-based National Arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon who is tasked by Urbiztondo to lead the officiating committee.

The likes of veteran IMs Barlo Nadera and Richard Bitoon and Cebu hopefuls NM Cyril Ortiga and Kim Steven Yap are just among a hundred of pawn pushers from all over the country participating in the strong event bankrolled by Ozamis Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog as major highlight of the 250th Anniversary Celebration of the Cotta Shrine.
