Malaybalay Water District seeks rate adjustment
THE Malaybalay City Water District (MCWD) said it will raise water rates to fund water expansion projects and offset increasing operational and maintenance costs.
In a public consultation hearing last week, MCWD officials explained that the adjustment is meant to improve water services and the over-all performance of the water firm.
If approved, the proposed water rate adjustment will bring the current P75 minimum monthly charge to P120.
Jenny U. Sale, MCWD corporate accountant, said the increase will help fund the replacement of old water pipes to minimize leakage problems and ensure uninterrupted water services to consumers.
Sale recalled that the last water rate adjustment in Malaybalay occurred in 1996, and that within the span of ten years, MCWD's operations had been burgeoning with the establishments of new water depots in other areas in Malaybalay.
Along with the increase, Sale assured the public of MCWD's full disclosure of finances and that transparency is ensured with recent laws subjecting all of the country's water districts to Commission on Audit (COA) rules.
While, autonomous, she said MCWD, as with other state firms, is represented by five different sectors of the community, thereby safeguarding the interests of its consumers.
Abundio Ukit, MCWD chairman of the board, appealed for public understanding, saying opposition to the proposed water rate hike is welcomed and that appropriate government agencies will evaluate the proposal. (Bong Torres/Danilo Adorador III)
