Local chessers off to richest event
By Lynde Salgados

LOCAL pawnpushers have their sights set on the richest ever chess event in Mindanao, the 3rd Prospero Pichay Sr. Memorial Open on August 12-14 at the Convention Hall, SSPSC-SSIT Campus in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur.

Offering a total prize fund of P300,000 with a cool P100,000 going to the champion, the four-day tourney is guaranteed to draw RP's cream of the crop topbilled by 22-year-old Super Grandmaster Mark Paragua and GMs Eugene Torre, Rogelio Antonio Jr., and Nelson Mariano II.

"Napakaganda sa takbo ngayon ng Philippine chess under new NCFP chair Congressman Butch Pichay Jr. kaya hindi puwedeng umayaw na maglaro sa Cantilan. Sa laki ng papremyo, parang ito na yata ang pinakamalaking torneyo na maganap sa Mindanao," then said Paragua during his recent stint here.

CDO-Misor's top player Johnnel Balquin, who failed miserably in the 1st Ozamiz National Open won by RP's newest International Master Oliver Dimakiling of Davao, will try to regain his bearing in Cantilan in the company of NM Levi Mercado, Silverio Abasolo, Bryan Jose and Lyndon Lumancas who all made it to the top-10 list in Ozamiz.

"Pero ang delikado lang ini nga lakaw kon ma-master ko kay mabulabog among linya sa Misor sa inter-province," said Balquin.

Due to hectic academic demands not to mention the conflicting inter-school chess rivalry here, there's no assurance yet for the participation of Oro's rising juniors Antonio Chavez Jr. and Randolph Dalauta and 12-year-old prodigy Lennon Hart Salgados in the Fide-rated competition sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines in cooperation with Cantilan Chess Club.

"The best unta kaayo ni nga exposure sa mga bata kay mga master ilang makontra. Maayo unta kon i-adjust ni Engr. Golez (Roger) ang sked sa Cosaa chess meet kay gawas sa Cantilan..karong August 19-20 na ang Cebu Shell leg," said National Arbiter Jun Cuizon referring to the Cosaa chess director from Xavier University.

The breakdown of prizes in the 3rd Prospero Pichay Sr. Memorial Cup are the following: Champion P100,000, 1st runner-up P50,000, 2nd runner-up P25,000, 3rd runner-up P15,000, 4th runner-up P10,000, 6th place P8,000, 7th place P7,000, 8th place P6,000, 9th place P5,000 and 10th place P4,000. Eleventh to 20th places will receive P3,000 each.
