Editorial: Underhanded attack
THE communist New People's Army (NPA) certainly knows when to butt in where it is clearly unwanted and the ongoing Mt. Mayon evacuation is one prime example of its innate tendency to unduly seize every opportunity to gain propaganda edge and inflict its own brand of calculated, ruthless violence against soldiers aiding in the rescue efforts.
This latest attack by the NPA rebels is the very same tactic they used in attacking soldiers who helped facilitate rescue and relief operations in several towns of Luzon during the height of the flooding there.
The reason or excuse given by these communist NPA rebels is that the rescue operations being held by the military is an excuse to initiate offensive operations against their ranks, while projecting the impression that they are helping in the rescue efforts.
Fortunately for the NPA rebels here in Misamis Oriental, they weren't dumb enough like their counterparts in Luzon to initiate assaults on the military and police officers who were helping out in the rescue efforts of families affected by the flashfloods and big waves in several towns here in Misamis Oriental.
Still, the least these communist NPA rebels could have done was to get out of the way and allow the soldiers to do their job of relocating the people and delivering basic goods and services to them in coordination with the local government units (LGUs) in the affected areas.
In contrast, we see other rebel groups like the Sandinistas in Nicaragua who put aside their differences with the ruling government in order to help out hand in hand the residents affected by national calamities.
But then these rebels would reason that these governments weren't as corrupt and as tainted as the national government here in the Philippines and the political conditions in those countries are far different from ours.
That may or may not be the case but they certainly aren't stupid enough to compromise their stance in order to accommodate all the demands of these groups.
And these groups don't issue all demands outright with the expectation that they be met with full compliance and full surrender from the governments they are contending with.
The common thread among these governments and the rebel groups is that they even agreed to meet halfway and sought a common ground of understanding. The NPA rebels and their political and legal fronts are simply blind to that point.
Hence it was no surprise that the NPA rebels launched an underhanded attack on the soldiers helping in the rescue operations in Mt. Mayon.
They prefer to see all things their way and won't stop reminding and imposing their beliefs to that effect on others.
