Two die, 6 hurt in vintage bomb blast By Inday Emeterio
VALENCIA CITY -- Two people were killed and six were seriously wounded when a Japanese-made World War II vintage bomb exploded in a village Friday.
The 23-year-old victim Roberto Cabugwason died on the spot when he tried to separate the bomb's bronze wire from its casing, setting off the explosive that ripped his body apart.
The explosion occurred inside Star Pawns Junkshop compound where Cabugwason was to sell the bronze wire he had intended to extract from the bomb.
The establishment is owned by one Darius Harbay, located at Purok 13, Barangay Poblacion.
Josie Estor, a resident of Lumbayao village of the same town, was looking close at Cabugwason peeling off the bomb parts, was brought to the town's hospital but died hours after.
Her husband Simplicio, of legal age, was also seriously wounded. The couple was working as sub-contractors for the junkshop, buying metal scraps from around the province.
Police said Cabugwason, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, had bought the bomb from somebody and believed the explosive would not anymore detonate because it was already looking antiquated.
Also wounded were junkshop employees Ainel P. Cabasag, 23, of Namnam, San Fernando town Bukidnon, Rene K. Talaman, 18, and Ronilo Bajo, 21.
Following the incident, Valencia City Acting Police Director Amadeo Absin Tabequiro Jr. said they have already appealed to locals to surrender all vintage bombs in their possessions.
As of Saturday, Tabequiro said they have received a total of three kilos of vintage bombs.
