Oro kiddies in perfect start

CAGAYAN de Oro's Lennon Hart Salgados, 12, and Francisco Porras III, 14, Monday opened up their Shell campaign at the SM Mall in Cebu City with three straight wins.

The two CDO bets, who got the full support of City Vice Mayor Michelle Tagarda Spiers and the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation for their billeting, now share the lead with home ground favorite Yves Christian Fiel, Zamboanga's Joey Florendo and Bacolod's Jerich Cajeras among the 3 pointers.

Fiel and Salgados both finished undefeated last year in this seven-round Swiss system event with the former earning superior tiebreak points to bag the championship.

"Ang kulba lang sa Shell kay kon mapilde ka'g usa out na ka sa tulo ka slots for the grandfinals in Manila. Kinahanglan gyod nga walay pilde," said National Arbiter Jun Cuizon, the mentor of Porras.

Bacolod pride Joel Pimentel, who along with Fiel and Salgados earned a trip to the national finals last year, is not around as he already qualified via the NCR leg. But in his absence came another worthy challenger from Zamboanga.

"Kusog gihapon ni si Tuti (Florendo)..layog gyod ni sa top-3 slots," said Salgados, a freshman varsity student of Corpus Christi high school.

Cebu's junior players also had a good start in the Cebu Leg of the 14th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championshps with 2005 grand finalist Zielbert Torres of Cebu Institute of Technology and Kim Steven Yap of the University of San Carlos leading the charge.

Upset wins in the 20-below junior division were recorded by unheralded Rene Franco and Ryan Cortes of the Cebu Institute of Technology who defeated Carlo Maraat of USC in 40 moves of the Two Knights Defense and Daniel Ortiz in an Irregular Opening, respectively. (With JJF reports)
