Cagayanons go global in Fiesta de Oro
(2nd of two parts)
Kumbira
ONE major fiesta event that guests and visitors should not miss in Cagayan de Oro is the Kumbira, which has been launched for the past 10 years by the Cagayan de Oro Hotels and Restaurants Association (COHARA).
Aptly named to mean a feast of gastronomic delights, Kumbira is a culinary exhibit showcasing the best of Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao's cuisine using the latest trend in international culinary art.
Fashion Dayag
A fashion showcase wittingly coined from the vernacular word pasundayag, Fashion Dayag is one spectacular event within the month-long fiesta celebration that showcases the best of the Filipino fashion sense.
More importantly, Fashion Dayag is a tribute to the young and promising fashion designers in the city whose creations, every Cagayanon can proudly claim as world-class.
Indigay sa Banda sa Divisoria
Watch local breed of music talents as they perform love songs, jazz, disco, slow rock and original Pilipino music in a battle of live band performance at the Kiosko Kagawasan in Divisoria.
Aside from providing an avenue for local artists to hone their talents, the Indigay sa Banda sa Divisoria is the City Government's way of promoting worthwhile activities for the youth and keeping them away from the influence of illegal drugs.
Mayor's marathon
Now on its 7th year, the Mayor Vicente Y. Emano Marathon, is a never-miss activity come fiesta celebration as athletes from the city and elsewhere in Mindanao compete for speed and stamina in various categories ranging from 32-K Open, 15-K Women Open, 6-K Fun-Tastic Gay Walkathon, 10-K Midnight Marathon, 4-K Executive Fun Run for City Government Employees.
Nightly cultural show
The city fiesta in Cagayan de Oro is not only a religious celebration among Cagayanons but is also an occasion where they share their God-given talents which they offer in nightly cultural presentations at the City Amphitheater.
The nightly cultural performances showcase the best of Mindanao's exotic and rich culture. These are rendered by talents coming from the city's 80 barangays, academe, and other institutions.
Cagayan de Oro Adventures
While in the city for the fiesta, guests may experience the various adventure activities that make Cagayan de Oro as a prime tourism destination in the country. From the wild rapids in the upstream and the placid waters of downstream Cagayan de Oro River, guests will surely love the thrill and fun of whitewater rafting, pinoy rafting, body boarding and kayaking.
Guests should not also miss to explore the awesome caves of Martha Beto and Monigue, exhilarating skybirdge walk, rapelling and ziplining at the Macahambus Adventure Park, and the super-challenging adventures at the Mapawa Nature Park.
Up Close and Personal with Cagayanon Culture
Cagayan de Oro City prides itself as a community of tri-people. What better way to appreciate and understand this distinct Cagayanon culture than to learn some of the ritual dances of the Higaonon tribe as well as tinikling, or try your hand at indigenous weaving and tribal beadworks at the tribal houses situated at the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village.
One of the various interesting activities that guests may also experience while enjoying the festive celebration of the city fiesta is the pot rowing at the famous ceramics and stoneware potteries in barangay Bulua.
Best Pasalubong Treats
For the best products and pasalubong treats, every Cagayanon visitor must try the city's famous delicacies among them are the S&N Peanuts; cashew nuts from barangay Lumbia; famous ham from Slers, Pine, Oro Ham and Darling Foods; candied fruits; manticado; leche fresca puto; ostrich meat, handmade paper; and sinamay fabric; among others.
