'Subokin is not yet off the hook' By Lynde Salgados
* JP says it's still an even score in as far as the rivalry is concerned
FOR Subokin Green Eagles, it's one big celebration to mark their 82-77 conquest of Ballpals Defenders to win the Fiesta Cup of the Southland league here on Sunday night at Liceo gymnasium.
For coach JP Pabillore of the losing squad, it's just but another episode of the colorful Ballpals-Subokin rivalry in the city's inter-club tourney.
After that title bout which saw Ballpals losing the hardest way via technicality, the ageless Pabillore could hardly hide the bitter feelings inside as quietly suggested by his facial look.
At one time during the club's noontime ball session at Pelaez Sports Center, Enting (as his grizzled basketball contemporaries would fondly call him) would rather keep it by himself pondering all alone underneath the court virtually unmindful of the gentle drizzles that began to drive away the Palaro goers from their normal rituals.
"I might be alone but not lonely. Our team? Yeah, it's down but not absolutely out." In fact, Pabillore told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that the triumphant Subokin is not yet off the hook in as far as their storied rivalry is concerned.
For one, JP said Subokin banked only on a "debatable" technical call when the game was on the line to escape from the jaws of defeat.
"But have we totally lost to them in the Southland league? Remember that Subokin was the losing finalist to Ballpals in the first conference. I mean, the score now is even at 1-all and there's still a decision to look forward to decide the winner in this rivalry. Wala pa sila modaug. Kumbaga sa kanta, mag-abot pa sa chorus," was JP's reminder to Subokin whose post-game comment from their team-playing manager cut like a sharp knife right into the hearts of die-hard Ballpals regulars.
"Wala kita nila mapilde sa pautokay. Nabentahaan lang kita sa tawag sa referee nga sa atong side ra motawag og technical bisan gapanumbag na sa pikas," insists Bobong "The Big Brother" Paasa, a member of MRD Metal Trading Ballpals, that won Southland's inaugural championship.
One veteran mainstay of Ballpals team in the Fiesta Cup, however, admitted some grievous lapses in their part.
"Nagkalat among mga batan-on. Maybe Subokin is right nga naay wala naggamit sa utok kay nag-contest sa itsa o nag-individual sa dula ang uban sa amo," confided one of the down-hearted Defenders who obviously did not want to be identified.
