Church urges good government in fiesta message
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

FOR this year's St. Augustine Fiesta, the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro is calling on all the members of her flock to contribute efforts for "good governance" and "serving others."

Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) under Colonel Aurelio Trampe beefed up their security measures in churches all over the city during the fiesta celebration Monday.

Also, traffic czar and former city councilor Ramon Tabor deployed as many traffic enforcers as he could to make sure that traffic flow in these churches are not in any way hampered.

In his Fiesta message, Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro head Archbishop Antonio Ledesma stresses the need on having good government.

He quoted St. Augustine, the patron saint of Cagayan de Oro, as saying that the need for a government stems from how people are living in the City of God and City of man.

"We need to have a government in this world -- in our country -- to make sure that all of us come together for the fulfillment of all particularly those in our society who have been given less in life," he said.

However, Archbishop Ledesma said this government should be that which follows the Laws of God, the source of life for its individual communities.

He said the principles on morality should be the foundations of each society, including, as according to the Holy Pope, that of Truth, Justice, Love and Freedom.

Archbishop Ledesma voiced hopes that this year's Fiesta Celebration of St. Augustine who is referred to as the "Doctor of the Church" particularly in the middle-ages will not be all in vain.

"I hope that this year's celebration of the Fest of St. Augustine, all concerned individuals would be more encouraged to come together and join efforts for good governance and serving each other," he said.

"Our efforts to serving our neighbors is one of the many ways of giving service to God," added Archbishop Ledesma.
