Royal Blood, Gold Crest lead early round winners
* At least 30 teams see action in the '06 CDO Fiesta chessfest
IMPORT-laced squads showed the way in yesterday's opening round matches of the 2006 Cagayan de Oro City Fiesta chess team tournament here at De Luxe Hotel.
Royal Blood, bannered by Ferdinand Leysa of Cotabato City, and Gold Crest Marketing -- skippered by Marikina-based Basilio Pandan -- strung up three-straight wins in the seven-round Swiss system event using the match point to determine the winners.
"Pero malayo pa yan. Magkalaglagan rin sa bandang huli," said Pandan, a native of Butuan City who once studied here at the Cagayan de Oro College.
Also relying on the streaking pair of Jan Vincent Cayaba and Jemuel Calo on board 2 and board 3, Goldcrest "Timbura" subdued Xavier University High School, 3.5-.5 as Royal Blood relied on the unexpected wins of veterans Cyr Garcis and Yasser Macadatar to hang on with 3-1 score against Rakil-Misor in the fateful third round.
"Psychologically, I'm virtually over in our match kay one piece down na ko. Had it not for that elementary blunder on his part I will never win in a position facing with a Bishop odd," said Macadatar of his morale-boosting victory over 12-year-old Lennon Hart Salgados. The ageless Garcis from General Santos City also whitewashed the 16-year-old Antonio Chavez Jr. with only National Master Hector Unding and Doming Oga securing a couple of draws for Rakil's side.
Also joining the 3 pointers are the MICC Iligan, Patag and J. Rosas Marketing with Misor/Pacuribot still battling with Tarantula as of this writing.
Iligan, powered by the tandem of Victor Lluch and Victor Escora, took the measure of Real Review, 3.5-.5 as Patag of NM Levi Mercado and 2005 National Shell Active junior champion Bryan Jose barely survived the strong challenge of XU Team A, 2.5-1.5.
Same with Rosas Marketing reinforced by Sun.Star Cebu sports correspondent Jaime Joshua Frias III, which encountered some rough sailings before overcoming the hard-fighting Camiguin X-Men, 2.5-.5 of Dr. Corrales.
Among the notable players to fall in the upset axe on Day 1 are XU A's Silverio Abasolo and Doc Move's Oliver Damunsong.
Abasolo got ambushed on board one by old guard Caloy Neri of DMPI while Damunsong got surprised by his pint-size 14-year-old opponent, William Joseph Cayaba of Corpus Christi Knights.
City Vice Mayor Michelle Tagarda Spiers came in to grace the opening ceremony in the company of lawyer Cancio Guibone, chairman of the city's Asset in sports development program.
"We're so thankful to the immediate assistance provided by National Master Roly Tan kay nakulangan atong piyesa tungod sa kadaghan sa nag-apil. The field is so competitive that we can expect a royale battle up to the seventh and final round," said National Arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon who supervised the pre-fiesta chessfest along with his wife, WNM Cecile Gaburno Cuizon and deputy arbiter Richelieu "Totong" Salcedo Sr.
