Tagoloan chessers shock them all By Lynde Salgados
SUBTLE maneuvers changed outright the landscape of the championship scenery.
Tagoloan Tarantula, top-billed by the youthful troika of Nelman Lagutin, Rodolfo Calonia Jr. and Venancio Calonia with veteran Aldrin Chan manning the lower board, watched front-running MICC-Iligan got ambushed by Goldcrest Marketing in the penultimate round, 2.5-1.5 then held its ground in the seventh and final round to grab the spotlight from the consistent round-by-round leader.
The wards of Tagoloan mayor Bambi Emano blanked their so-called "sister team" Rakil-Misor of Doming Oga, 4-0 in the last round then edged out fellow 12-pointer MICC-Iligan in the Bucholz tiebreak to bag the championship trophy, donated by NCFP chair Representative Butch Pichay, in the 2006 Cagayan de Oro City Fiesta chess team tournament on Sunday at De Luxe Hotel.
Tagoloan and Iligan (Victor Lluch, Victor Escorra, Kimmy King, Bryan Maghanoy), however, equally divided the combined amount of P19,000 as guaranteed prizes for the first and second placers.
Bankrolled by National Master Roly Tan and his older brother Robert, the Basilio Pandan and Jan Vincent Cayaba-led Goldcrest (11 pts) relied on the 6th-round heroics of Jemuel Calo and Loloy Torres on the lower boards en route to pocketing the third-place honor worth P4,000 also with trophy.
"Grabe ang "psy-war" nga gigamit ni Calo kang King sa Iligan kay kalit lang midaug sa drawish nga posisyon," Lagutin said of Calo, Goldcrest's scoring machine who won the gold medal on board 4.
Barangay Patag, powered by NM Levi Mercado and Bryan Jose, tallied 10 points to claim the P3,000 prize for fourth place.
Fifth to eight places according to tiebreak results are Real Review, XU Team A, Camiguin X-Men and J. Rosas Marketing.
While Royal Blood, Misor Pacuribot, Keith Surplus Center and Rakil-Misor shared 9th to 12th spots in the 30-team field.
The other gold medallists on their respective board assignments are Doc Moves' Johnnel Balquin (brd 1), XU Team A's Emmanuel Crisologo (brd 2), Keith Surplus Center's Alfredo Rapanot Jr. (brd 3) and Atty. Achmad Tomambiling on board 5.
"Successful ug bibo atong fiesta tournament. Daghan lalis ug debati pero taman ra diha walay gamitay sa kusog," said organizer Jun Cuizon.
