Surigao Open set Thursday, Reintegrado top Class B anew

DESPITE making their marks in the Ozamis Open and 3rd Pichay Memorial Cup in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, leading chess players remain doubtful whether they could join in the P100,000-rich 2006 Mindanao Open chess tournament on September 6 to 8 in Surigao City.

The nine-round Swiss system event also sponsored by NCFP chair, Congressman Butch Pichay Jr. will be held at the Maharlika Training Center in Lipata.

"Pero ang problema lagi kay ugma (Wednesday) na magsugod ang dula P500 pa akong kuwarta," said Candidate Master Johnnel Balquin, the Aurora Open champion who cracked the top-10 list of the Fide-rated Pichay Cup.

In the said event slated in far away Cantilan, a total of 19 chessers from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental were able to participate, owing to Valencia City-based businessman Richard Wong who largely funded the trip on board his brand new Estrada.

"Mao ni'y kapoy sa chess kay nihit kaayo ang sponsor. Dili parehas sa basketball nga humot kaayo bisan kalapait ang performance," one observer said.

Meanwhile, William Reintegrado on Sunday edged out Choy Dalauta in their best-of-3 final showdown to pocket the P2,000 top purse of the Divisoria "Doc" Chess Club's Category B 40 and above chess tournament.

Also adjudged as the top senior, the 60-something Manny Aguilar placed third behind Reintegrado and second-placer Dalauta.

"Jackpot lang ko kay before sa finals kaduha gyod ko na bye (no opponent) kay pirme man bungkig ang tapada," Reintegrado said.

Results of the Class C Asset Fiesta chess tournament at Deluxe Hotel saw Eure Faith Sabuga, Jikob Jokosalem, Bryl Braña, Karlo Onil del Solor and Julie Anne Opema emerging as the top-5 finishers with Sabuga playing through undefeated in five rounds. (LLS)
