NEA okays power utility's reorganization
By Richel V. Umel
Lanao Correspondent

MARAWI CITY -- The National Electrification Administration (NEA) approved the re-structuring of Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative Inc. (Lasureco) to serve member-consumers better with the support from the energy sector, NEA Administrator Edita S. Bueno said.

Bueno said the NEA recently approved the creation of three business areas as business centers to solve the operational problems.

These include Marawi City, municipalities under the province first district as area 1, and the second district with respective area managers covering area 3.

Bueno confirmed that the Department of Energy already released P27 Million to support the rehabilitation project that will start this month in Marawi City.

At the moment, the Transmission Company (Transco) is completing the construction of a 28-kilometer Abaga-Marawi 69 KV transmission line to ensure a power supply in Marawi City. The project will be completed before the start of the Muslim holy month Rahmadan.

Marawi City generates 70 percent of the revenue in rural electrification in Lanao del Sur.

Lasureco is the sole distributor of electric power to all 40 towns and one city in Lanao del Sur.

Bueno said that for several years, its operation deteriorated and suffered financial setback due to high systems loss caused by rampant pilferage and lack of material to rehabilitate the system.

Lasureco is very low in collection efficiency resulting in huge arrearages mainly with the National Power Corporation (NPC).

One of the strategies adopted to improve the operation was the organization of an Advisory Council that was later converted into an Interim Board of Directors (IBD) composed of credible Maranaw personalities.

Engineer Beliamen Mamainte, a member of IBD, was designated as acting general manager to oversee the entire restructuring process.

Meanwhile, construction of lines has been going on in the remaining un-energized barangays including three barangays of Piagapo, 16 barangays in the town of Bayang, and four barangays in the town Butig.

Around P11 million have been allocated for the completion of the project to be completed on December 2006, Bueno added.

Bueno urged the Muslim communities and the local government units of Lanao del Sur to help and cooperate the re-structuring process of Lasureco to improve the socio-economic condition, environment, and peace and order.
