Corpus, XU chessers stamp class in Cosaa

CORPUS Christi and Xavier University teams are poised to dominate the 2006 Cosaa Meet chess team tournament, which resumes Monday at the Cagayan de Oro College's Atrium building.

The Corpus Christi Knights, comprised of Randolph Dalauta, Lennon Hart Salgados, Neil Tecson, and the Villanueva brothers (Patricio and Nicholo), took the secondary boys' rivalry by storm as they won their first four matches without dropping a single game.

"Karon lang namo nabantayan ni Lennon nga mga potential man sab diay among teammates karon. Dili parehas sa una nga wala koy timbang," said Dalauta, the 2003 Philippine Age-Group 14-under champion, who's now in his final year at CCS junior varsity chess team.

The Knights' female counterparts also won all their team matches with the experienced tandem of Shian Tigulo and Frances Olassiman leading the charge.

Xavier University of XU Chess Academy training director Roger Golez, meanwhile, took the fronts in the tertiary (men and women) war as well as in the elementary boys' competition.

With Silverio Abasolo halving the point with COC's Jan Vincent Cayaba on board one, the Senior Crusaders -- also powered by Jordan Muleta, Emmanuel Crisologo and Ralph Dalauta -- won their last bout by the score of 3.5 to .5.

The Abegail Aquino-led XU women were also in the forefront as well as XU's elementary toddlers bannered by Joseph Parba and Kenneth Norman Honculada. (Lynde Salgados)
