70th birthday celebrations of two brave women

A LADY that has undergone a lot and I mean a lot! A few months ago she celebrated her 70th birthday.

She was described by her cousin Jeanette D. Aragon as a lady of steel. Truly I too think she is. She has survived first, a car accident.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The car was a total wreck and the people who saw the car would never believe that the person inside was alive. That was December of 1989. That year, she was in and out of the hospital, learning how to walk again, to get all the shots there was for her to be free of infection. That alone, to me was an ordeal if the lady involved was a weak and an easily depressed person.

But not Helen Wilkom Quimpo. She fought back, went back to work and on December l993, became Asst. Director for the Bureau of Internal Revenue. On March l994, she became Asst. Commissioner in Manila. A big responsibility for a survivor like Helen.

But, that's not all! While she was undergoing an examination for a lump on her left breast, she was advised to undergo mastectomy. From that examination, it was again found out to have clogged arteries and was advised to have a bypass. She had a quadruple bypass! Her doctor daughter, Dr. Maelene Pile, could never imagine herself on her mother's place. She knows what her mother had to go through.

Now, when you look at her, she is back to normal, very pretty with her closed cropped hair due to the chemotherapy she underwent, and when she celebrated her 70th birthday all her children came home to be with her and even cousins and relatives came from all over to join in the birthday celebration at Casa Real, V.I.P Hotel.

The birthday celebration was a very happy occasion for all her children, relatives and friends and a good thanksgiving for Helen, the Lady of Steel
!

Meanwhile, another 70th birthday celebrant last l8th of August was a good friend, a sweet, demure lady who was widowed at an early age and was feted by all her children, Rebecca "Becky" Floirendo Hughes. The celebration was held at Grand Caprice, Lim Ket Kai Center.

There were over 200 guests present, and her C.W.L. friends presented a number for her as well as her widow friends, also her ballroom friends. The ballroom dancing continued after the program that was prepared in her honor. Truly a very nice celebration for this unassuming, quiet and friendly lady, Becky.
