Misor to host opening; Lanao Norte joins MVBA
THE second conference of the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) will open this coming September 23 (Saturday) at the Xavier University gym here with league chairman Governor Oscar Moreno as host.
Moreno's Misamis Oriental will face Montaña Pawnshop of Armando Quibod, who recently relocated from Davao to adjacent Digos City, in the opening game made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, MP Promotions, Nature's Spring, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva and Nike Basketball.
After a successful ML Kwarta Padala First Conference from February to June of this year won by M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City, the league braces for a bigger and better follow up starting with the entry of expansion team Lanao del Norte of Governor Imelda Dimaporo.
According to head coach and Provincial Sports Coordinator Nelson Lasola, the team will be composed of local talents plus a few players from nearby provinces.
They will play their home games at their ultra modern sports complex located in the provincial capital of Tubod, a venue that has played host to the Palarong Pambansa and many other major sports events.
The Misamis Oriental cagers hope to improve on their First Conference performance behind their main scoring punch of Dondon Mendoza and Jesson Alfeche.
Coach Rex Salvaña will also bank heavily on guard Ramil Tagupa and new recruits Gilbert Demape and Jerome Barbosa.
Meanwhile, Montaña coach Flordelito "Dodong" Cagampang also beefed up their roster by acquiring center Arian Daja and guards Bob Ilanga and JR Atablanco to join Randy Panerio, Dado Ayson and Allan Quibod.
Completing the six-team Mindanao Division will be defending Mindanao champion MP Warriors-GenSan (formerly PacMan-GenSan) of Manny Pacquiao, Iligan Archangels of Mayor Lawrence Cruz and another newcomer in the Duterte-Davao Agilas of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Basketball legend Willy Generalao serves as the Mindanao Commissioner.
Games in the Visayas Division will commence on October 7.
