Pagadian survives Davao to win, 97-93

PAGADIAN CITY -- The Pagadian Explorers barely survived Montaa Pawnshop-Davao, 97-93, in overtime Saturday night to join Bacchus/Harbour Centre-San Juan on top of the standings of the 2006 Spring Cooking Oil NBC National Cup at the packed city gym here.

The Explorers had to survive a big scare from the neophyte team, which reprised Ateneo Blue Eagles' Game 1 escape act in the final 1.3 seconds of the regulation to force the extension.

Jonjon Gonzaga got the perfect inbound pass and eluded Nelson Asaytono's defense for an open undergoal stab that stunned the highly-partisan crowd and Pagadian bench in disbelief.

The Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co, however, regrouped in the extra period as Asaytono, Peter Naron, Mike Orquillas and Melvin Mamaclay got their acts together to pull of the gripping victory.

Bong Marata came through with 21 points and five assists to lead the Explorers while Peter Naron and Nelson Asaytono almost dished out double-double games.

Naron had 19 points and eight rebounds while Asaytono put up 12 markers and nine caroms. Mamaclay also hit 11 point including a key three-pointer in the overtime.

The Jewelers of businessman Armando Quibod absorbed their second straight loss despite getting a conference-high 32 point from Randy Panerio.

Montaa-Davao is looking for its first win the tournament supported by Sulpicio Lines, Spring Cooking Oil, Molten, Nature's Spring, Hjoliday Plaza Hotel-Cebu and Prime Channel as off presstime against the defending champion Ozamiz Cotta.
