Governor to decide poll plans in December
"THERE is time for politics," reacted Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno to the reported plans of Second District Representative Augusto Baculio to challenge him in next year's election.
Baculio, whose term ends next year, is reportedly eyeing the Capitol seat.
His bid for governorship was earlier described as "almost certain" by Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano, a political kingpin and former Misamis Oriental governor.
But Moreno said he sees no problems and bore no ill will in case Baculio decides to challenge him.
He said he will announce his political plans "probably in December," adding that proper announcements should be made to avoid complicating his party's coalition with the dominant PaDayon Pilipino (PaDayon).
There were talks that PaDayon will abandon Moreno in favor of a new candidate from its fold, possibly Emano's son, Tagoloan Mayor Yevgeny Emano. The younger Emano, however, indicated he would not challenge Moreno.
Before deciding whether to pursue a second term in the Capitol, Moreno said he would consult the coalition and assess "all situations," amid the corruption allegations leveled against him.
Moreno is facing graft charges filed by two local media personalities.
"I just hope that we can push through our political campaign in a gentleman manner," he said.
The governor admitted that there was so much political intrigues being sown in recent days that it had threatened to mire the working relationships between him and the Provincial Board.
Moreno added that he doesn't discount the possibility of Vice Governor Julio Uy running for the gubernatorial post of Misamis Oriental.
He said he had been familiar with Uy through his days in law school at San Beda College in Manila.
"However our working relationship had been amicable at best and it is his decision whether to run or not," he said.
Moreno named those likely to be affiliated with former governor Antonio Calingin in the Provincial Board like members Henry Clyde Abbot and Alejo Olano, adding he won't align himself with them. (Stephen Capillas with a report from Sun.Star SuperBalita)
