Wednesday, July 04, 2007 Editorial: Quash cultists
THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) should do something about the reports that a Satanic cult of sorts is operating in the city not long after it spread its malignant influence first in Dumaguete and later in nearby Misamis Oriental towns like Tagoloan.
According to these unconfirmed reports, the Satanic cult had been operating in villages like Bugo, Lapasan, and Tablon, where they allegedly knock on home and seize any person who comes out, later slicing them up.
One has yet to come out with figures but the reports of this cult has scared city residents to the point that they are closing shop early and have their children home before 9 p.m.
While it's good for teenagers to go home in order to avoid trouble, the city police should crack down on these cultists if only to rid the city of killers and other lowlifes.
Bedol's capture
Now that they landed provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) supervisor Lintang Bedol, the Comelec now has the option of whether or not entertaining Bedol's continued runaround or simply fire him and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law for his alleged questionable handling of the elections in Maguindanao province.
Apparently the election agency chose the former as Bedol's lawyer assured that his client will show up for the much delayed hearing by the Comelec despite numerous attempts at evading the activity.
This despite the questionable zero result of the Genuine Opposition in that province, the reports of harassment at the polling precincts and the loss of thousands of certificates of canvas (COCs), which were earlier placed and secured in Bedol's hotel room.
All this while the fate of either senatoriable--Juan Miguel Zubiri and Aquilino Pimentel III--hang in the balance, more precariously for Koko Pimentel since his lead is now cut to a mere thousand votes over Zubiri.
But why the prolonged focus on Bedol, who had admitted to doing no wrong despite the evidence on him?
At any rate, Bedol's arrest would at least signify to the country that the national government is indeed taking pains to sanction its erring employees, never mind the fact that Bedol was given too much time and exposure to flaunt his violation of the summons issued to him.
