Thursday, August 16, 2007 City Hall mulls market upgrades
CITY Hall vowed to transform the Cogon Public Market into an ideal marketplace that is beneficial to both Cagayan de Oro residents and City Government.
Mayor Constantino Jaraula disclosed this when he joined Sen. Manuel "Mar" Roxas on a market inspection Wednesday morning.
Along this line, Mayor Jaraula ordered the City Economic Enterprise Department (CEED) to make an inventory of vendors who are presently occupying the atrium of the Cogon Market's ground floor.
These vendors, Mayor Jaraula said, will be relocated to the second floor while the atrium will be used as an open space for special events and gatherings. A fountain will also be installed at the atrium.
To maximize the economic potential of the third level, Mayor Jaraula also planned to open a sports and fitness gym where people can engage in healthy activities and recreation.
Mayor Jaraula hoped that with the realization of these plans, the Cogon Public Market and Commercial Complex would attract patrons regardless of social status or class. The lowly market vendors will be given an opportunity for a better economic undertaking.
Mayor Jaraula said that this could also encourage vendors to ply their trade inside the market rather than bear the hazards and risk sidewalk vending. (City Information Office)
