Up next, 10-man round robin tourney
WITH over a dozen entries all ready to go all-out for battle royale, the Cagayan de Chess Club is optimistic in putting up a serious threat in the 2007 Iligan Open Fiesta chess tournament sometime this month.
National Master Levi Mercado and former National Shell Junior champion Bryan Jose lead the Oro cast boosted by the likes of candidate master Johnnel Balquin, Jake Gonzales, Sonny Lumancas, Jaime Frias, Rey Abbu, Nazario Ubanan, Lolong Coquilla, Jay Obsioma and Cris Cubero.
"Gawas sa taga Iligan, mora'g ang mga Davao players ra ang kusog nga ilang ma-engkwentro kay naa man say ongoing nga tournament sa Cebu," said Jokorn Maestrado who elected to stay.
Prizes at stake in the two-day tourney to be played at Alfresco Restaurant are P15,000, P8,000, P5,000 and P3,000 for the top-four winners. Fifth to 10th placers will get P500 each.
After the Iligan tourney, some of them will be joining 2007 National Shell qualifiers Lennon Hart Salgados and Antonio Chavez Jr. in a 10-man round robin event (30 minutes time control) supported by former city councilor Lawyer Roy Hilario Raagas, Oro Chowking magnet Ferdie "Master" Padilla and MRD manager James Abucejo.
"It's going to be a three Saturdays skirmishes atop the checkered board featuring who's who in Cagayan de Oro chess depending on the turnout of resources from our sports-loving friends," the organizers said.
