N. Mindanao SMEs pour P87-B in region

A TOTAL regional investment of P87.053 billion have been recorded in Northern Mindanao under the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) program from 2003 up to the second half of 2007.

Data at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Northern Mindanao show that a total of 38,360 establishments have been classified under the SME during the period, DTI Regional Director Alicia V. Eusena said.

She said 45 of these SME's were classified as "large" or had investments of more than P100 million while 38,315 were classified as "micro" or had investments of P3 million or below.

Likewise, about 515 SME's were classified as "small" or had investments from P3.1 million to P15 million, 132 SME's were classified as "medium" or had investments from P15.1 million but not more than P100 million and 53 others were unclassified.

Eusena said the annual investments generated by the SME in the region are as follows: P20.908 billion in 2003, P13.965 billion in 2004, P19.219 billion in 2005, P23.777 billion in 2006 and P9.183 billion for the first semester, this year.

Meanwhile, by source of investments, business name registrations (BNR) accounted for P2.26 billion or 25 percent of the SME performance in the region from January to June 2007.

This was followed by banks with P849.40 million or 9 percent, ecozones, P244 million or 3 percent, one town, one product (OTOP)/cluster projects, P68.36 million or 1.0 percent and from other multi-sources investments, P5.72 billion or 62 percent.

Infrastructure and services sector also paced out all other sectors with P4.6 billion or 50 percent, agri-based sector, P1.6 billion of 7 percent, metal sector, P525 million or 6 percent, consumer manufacturer sector, P224 million or 2 percent.

Chemical-based sector, P35 million or 0.4 percent, mining and metallurgical sector with P7 million or 0.08 percent, forest-based sector, P4 million or 0.04 percent and other sources, not elsewhere classified, P851 million or 9 percent.

On the other hand, a total of 169,543 individuals were employed under the SME from 2003 up to the first semester of this year, Carmel Mabao, DTI Regional Information Officer, said.

The DTI-Northern Mindanao said the region's employment performance distribution under the SME during the period also shows the following data: 29,781 individuals were employed in 2003, 33,405 in 2004, 43,075 in 2005, 45,290 in 2006 and 17,992 from January to June, this year. (Trends)
