Monday, October 08, 2007 Editorials: Calling neighborhood LGUs
WITH three murders in the past three months outside of Cagayan de Oro, the City Government should call the attention of the provincial governments of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur as well as the Marawi City government to monitor their peace and order situation aside from keeping a watchful eye on those terrorist elements as well as the depravations of those disgruntled Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels.
Sure, there's Vice Mayor Vicente Emano who has his connections with all sorts of people but surely the security of Cagayan de Oro's residents inside and outside the city doesn't depend entirely on him.
But there are people who want to pursue that kind of mentality hence the creation of the Anti-Crime Board which eventually got integrated as a component--albeit one with an armed sub-component if the vice mayor had his way--in the City Peace and Order Council.
Whatever their stance, local government units (LGUs) in the neighboring cities and provinces should also watch out for the welfare of their neighbors since anything that would happen to them in their turf would already sully whatever reputation they have.
Texting the Regional Peace and Order Council; apparently members are going to hold a meeting sometime this month and hopefully they would tackle this concern aside from the always present threat of terrorism and insurgency of the communist rebels and the MILF.
Millendo and Pacquiao
THERE was something special about the last two days with Cagayan de Oro's very own Milan Millendo and the country's champ Manny Pacquiao emerging victorious over their rivals.
Though Pacquiao didn't score the knockout many fans and bettors hoped, the victory was convincing enough to send a message to all doubters that the Filipino champ is the gold standard for world boxing now even with all the rumors and distractions that came his way.
Through it all, Millendo's victory became yet another source of jubilation as it meant that there is another world champion in the making.
As Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno said, Millendo's victory may be his ticket to the big time, not necessarily Pacquiao league but certainly close for now.
We hope this is true for Cagayan de Oro needs a champ of its own to show his wares on the world stage and show to all and sundry that there's more to Mindanao than just insurgency and terrorists.
